Vision of a Republic

It is said that no man is an island. I am an ultra-liberal in the way that I strongly believe in preserving individual freedom to the highest possible degree. However, each one of us is also a part of community. Safe from living in complete anarchy, we need some form of governance to promote the common good, even if this means curtailing to some extent our individual liberties.

I was born in a republican country (France) and I live in another one (Taiwan). I am attached to this form of government, because compared to some other alternatives (Absolute Mornachy or the Vichy Regime in France, the former KMT rule in Taiwan or the Communist Party rule in Mainland China...) it is the most adapted to deliver public wellbeing to the majority of people while preserving personal liberties and the rights of the minorities. The existing republics that exist around the world (France, Taiwan, the USA among many others...) can however be improved.

One area of improvement is the election method used. See a different way to vote for further details.

I am currently in the process of completing the election section. Once this is completed, I'd like to introduce another topic that is close to my heart: tax reform. It sounds boring or complicated, but it is actually quite amazing to notice that we have been taxed the wrong way for such a long time and that such taxes (mainly labor taxes such as income tax) are hugely detrimental to our society and ought to be boldly replaced by green taxes (taxes on pollution or on use of natural resources). More on this much later.

I would like to point out that I am not claiming that any of the solutions I am putting forward are the only solutions. I am not even claiming that they are the best solutions. I actually believe that the best solution to any problem comes from within oneself. A good heard and a steady mind are much better than any alternative election method or progressive tax. However, being at peace with oneself and with the society doesn't mean that we cannot strive to improve our society: quite on the contrary, being at peace is a pre-condition to bringing lasting, positive changes to the society.

It is from this state of mind that I offer what I believe could be some solutions to many of the society's current ills.
